Marc Almond

With 29 years in the business and well over 30 million records sold worldwide, Camp bestival welcomes a true legend, the flamboyant, elegant and ever so glamorous Marc Almond.

After an unsettled childhood moving throughout the north of England Marc finally found himself when he left school and started art college where he began to experiment with performance art and cabaret pop and the early seeds of his extraordinary talent began to take root.  It was while he was at college that Marc hooked up with Dave Ball and formed the soon to be legendary Soft Cell.

Over the next five years, over the course of four extraordinary albums the duo created some truly genre defining electro pop, encapsulated by their classic take on Gloria Jones’ “Tainted Love”.  The pair amicably split in 1984 to concentrate on their own solo projects and in doing so one of our most interesting and innovative troubadours was born.

Over the next two and a half decades Marc has gone on to produce an audaciously brave body of work which has managed straddle the underground and the mainstream perfectly, taking in influences as diverse as northern soul, music hall, flamenco and Russian folk music, his music embracing everything that is alluring about romance and glamour without ever being crass or synthetic.

2010 sees Marc celebrating his 30th year in the business and a perfect opportunity to showcase his considerable talents for the lucky people of Camp Bestival.
