Suzanne Vega
When Suzanne Vega appeared on the scene in the mid eighties she ushered in a new female, acoustic, folk-pop singer-songwriter movement that would include Tracy Chapman, Shawn Colvin and Indigo Girls. Emerging into a landscape that was overtly pop orientated she immediately offered something different, writing and producing songs that were poetic, complicated and emotional.
20 years on she is still regarded as one of the finest singer-songwriters in the world with a back catalogue of material ranging from perfect pop to industrial to bossa nova to folk, without ever losing an overall sense of elegance and intelligence.
Now signed to the legendary Blue Note label, Vega continues to push herself and her audience, 2007’s ’Beauty and Crime’ being right up there with her finest work.
Vega’s live performances are coveted and it’s not hard to understand why, taking in two decades of hits from first single ‘Marlene on the Wall’ to the wondrous ‘Luka’ right up to last years ’Frank and Ava’, oh and if you think you know her biggest UK hit ’Toms Diner’ just wait until you hear it how it’s meant to be heard, live, a cappella, truly spellbinding.
